3. Finding and sharing solutions for today’s food system’s challenges

Carl & Jean Ryther Education Building
Named in honor of our first Education Director, Carl Ryther and his wife Jean, our two-story, 3,500-square-foot Education Building is made entirely out of straw bales grown right next door! Straw bale buildings are typically less expensive to build and require much less specialized labor and tools. This natural insulation can perform 2-3x more efficiently than well-insulated homes and often 5-10x more than older homes. This can save up to 75% in energy costs! Most construction materials today use synthetic and highly processed materials that contribute significantly to indoor and outdoor pollution, while straw bale construction is natural, sustainable, and pollutant-free.
Our Education Building was crafted using wheat straw. Chicken wire surrounds the stacks of straw bales and is then covered with plaster to protect the straw from moisture. With little moisture and a high carbon/low nitrogen content, the straw is resistant to decomposition! Straw bale buildings even provide 3x more burn resistance than conventional builds with stellar soundproofing and a unique and beautiful aesthetic.
